Climate Protection and Decarbonization

From 1-12 December 2014 governments convened for one of the last UNFCCC negotiating rounds to prepare a universal climate agreement which shall be reached in Paris in 2015. The German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) observed the climate negotiations and together with international partners organises several contributions to current debates:

  • A Global Framework for Climate Action could build links between non-state and subnational initiatives and the multilateral climate regime, and improve coordination in a fragmented governance landscape
  • Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs): DIE, SEI and CICERO present their work on feasible and practical approaches to assess and review the INDCs, which parties are supposed to submit before ‘Paris’
  • The DIE partners in a side event on “REDD and Beyond: International and Indigenous Strategies in Forest Protection”. The event provides space for experts discussing the social inclusiveness of REDD+ and forest finance.
  • Deforestation is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Peru. DIE and GGGI provide a high-level forum to discuss Green Growth strategies for tropical forests to address economic, social and environmental needs
  • International adaptation finance needs to reach vulnerable communities at the local level: DIE together with international partners presents possibilities for and experiences with decentralized, sub-national funding approaches
