Municipal development co-operation in Germany

The engagement in development cooperation of municipalities in Germany and worldwide as in situ political entities in close proximity to the citizens is becoming increasingly important. Project description

The engagement in development cooperation of municipalities in Germany and worldwide is becoming increasingly important. The engagement by municipalities, cities and regions as in situ political entities in close proximity to the citizens, contributes substantially to a peaceful and sustainable development. Municipal activities and cooperation in the context of municipal development co-operation is building upon the goals and impulses specified in the 2030 Agenda and allows for global/international forms of cooperation beyond the North-South-paradigm. Furthermore, global connections can be conveyed by educational and information offers at the local level. The municipal development co-operation addresses topics such as migration and forced displacement, health, or the impacts of climate change while working closely together with civil-society actors.
The project team conducts the study “Municipal development co-operation in Germany”, commissioned by the Service Agency Communities in One World (SKEW), to take stock of German municipal development policy in the context of current national and international framework conditions. The study updates a previous DIE-study from 2009. An online survey with German municipalities as well as interviews with representatives of municipalities, municipal associations and institutions at federal and state level are planned. This study aims to contribute to the further development of municipal development co-operation in Germany. The study will be carried out in cooperation with the German Institute for Development Evaluation (DEval), which will evaluate the support of municipal development cooperation by the SKEW.
