Subject to final approval of funds, the position may be filled as of 1 August 2022 and is limited until 31 July 2025 with a possible option of contract extension. The successful candidate will manage and coordinate the new international “Research Network Sustainable Global Supply Chains” hosted by the DIE in collaboration with the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) and the Stiftung Wissenschaft and Politik (SWP). The network is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to screen supply chain research with the aim of extracting lessons for policymaking and also conduct and commission new policy-relevant research.

Specific Tasks:

• Conduct and publish research on sustainable supply chains, especially its implications in the Global South;
• Manage and coordinate DIE’s contributions to the Research Network and support efforts to encourage collaborative research with and among African scholars; 
• Work jointly with the institutional partners to mobilise and assure the quality of contributions from the network for a series of research reports, blogs, podcasts, and online seminar.

Qualifications and requirements:

• Master, or preferably PhD, with excellent grades in economics or other social sciences;
• In-depth knowledge, research experience and academic publications in the field of global supply chains. A research focus on Africa would be an asset;
• Knowledge in and experience with research methodologies in social sciences (quantitative and/or qualitative);
• Communication skills and proven experience with blogs, online seminars, podcasts, policy briefs and other formats for communicating research results to academic and non-academic audiences;
• Research or work experience in developing countries;
• Fluent written and spoken English; good command of German is an asset;
• Willingness and aptness to travel abroad, including countries with a tropical climate („Tropentauglichkeit“).
