The position may be filled as of 01 June 2023 and is limited to three years. A contract extension may be possible.

 

TEFISCON is a German-French project funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR), implemented jointly with Université Clermont Auvergne. The project deals with the impact of tax expenditures on the fiscal contract in low- and middle-income countries. Activities are embedded in IDOS’ long-standing work on tax and development, which has led to the launch of the Global Tax Expenditures Database (www.GTED.net) in June 2021. In the context of the project, the IDOS team will conduct field research in Zimbabwe, Uganda and Colombia, using a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods.

 

The position is aimed at doctoral students who want to combine the acquisition of professional experience with the completion of a dissertation. Preferably, your doctorate will be under the supervision of a colleague based at IDOS. The dissertation topic should have a content-related and methodological proximity to the TEFISCON project.

 

Qualifications and requirements:

  • A Master with excellent grades in economics (in particular public finance), political science or related fields.
  • Proven knowledge of taxation in developing countries. In-depth knowledge of tax expenditures as well as experience with policy advice are additional assets.
  • Experience with research methodologies in social sciences. Skills in quantitative research methods and willingness to develop them further.
  • Research or work experience in sub-Saharan Africa and / or Latin America is an asset.
  • Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary, globally dispersed team.
  • Proven organizational skills.
  • Fluent written and spoken English. Good command of Spanish and / or French is an asset.
  • Willingness and aptness to travel abroad, including countries with a tropical climate (“Tropentauglichkeit”).
