Background

From 6 July to 15 July 2021, representatives from governments, civil society, and the private sector will gather at the annual UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in New York to take stock of progress on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda. Among the SDGs under review at this year’s HLPF will be SDG 16 on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

On 6 July, the German Development Institute, UNDP’s Oslo Governance Centre (OGC), and Southern Voice will organize an official  HLPF side event in the form of a Global Policy Roundtable under the title “As governance crises worsen COVID-19 impact, is SDG 16 key for recovery?”

This event comes at a time when the world is increasingly challenged by different forms of risk and the question how to manage them. The Covid-19 pandemic has cast a spotlight on the systemic interlinkages that exist between socio-economic human development and the protection of natural resources. Successfully addressing these interlinkages to achieve integrated sustainability governance will be imperative to minimize systemic risks in the future and build back better.

COVID-19 has set back advances made across all the SDGs, including SDG 16. This is critical because effective, accountable and inclusive governance is an important requirement for the integrated implementation of  2030 Agenda and will be key for post-pandemic recovery.

Purpose and Objectives

Bringing together the latest research and expertise on the subject, with perspectives from the Global South, this roundtable will address the following questions:

  1. What are emerging trends on SDG 16 (peace, justice and inclusion)? How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected progress on this Goal in different contexts?
  2. Peace, justice and inclusion can support progress on the 2030 Agenda as a whole, including on health, the economy and the environment. What do we know about these ‘SDG 16 interlinkages’ and how can we use them pro-actively as levers to inform recovery?

The event will showcase key findings from research initiatives on:

  • SDG 16 interlinkages across the 2030 Agenda. Led by the German Development Institute.
  • Emerging trends on SDG 16 from regional roundtables and thematic e-discussions aimed at amplifying research and perspectives from Latin America, Asia and Africa. Led by Southern Voice.
