Benefit, cost and risk sharing in hydropower projects on international rivers

Event Type

Bonn, 25.09.2013

Large dams have long been contested due to their potential negative environmental and social impacts, but are now experiencing a “revival” as well-established, non-fossil energy source. However, the majority of African rivers with hydropower potential are internationally shared and unilateral dam development may lead to conflicts among riparian states. Ines Dombrowsky, head of Department "Environmental Policy and Natural Resources Management" at the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) presented the results of her recent study on projects involving Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Burundi as well as Rwanda and Tanzania and analysed how benefits, costs and risks can be shared.

Programme:

  • Welcome: Alma van der Veen, Public Relations, Centre for Development Research (ZEF)
  • Presentation: Ines Dombrowsky, Head of Department “Environmental Policy and Natural Resources Management” at the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE)
  • Discussion: Aurélie Lüders, KfW, Project Manager Environment and Energy, Division Subsahara Africa
