The workshop “Commoning in Crisis: The Value of Commons Thinking for Environmental Governance” will combine roundtable discussions, short participant presentations, collective brainstorming, and writing sessions. We welcome you to join us, bringing your insights and creativity to the table, and to explore the possibility of developing a publication together. I will be guided by Prof. Dr. Christine Beitl, an environmental anthropologist at the University of Maine whose research on the coastal and marine commons in South America, North America, and South Asia has made important contributions to commons scholarship.
This workshop invites researchers and students working on environmental governance, common-pool resources, environmental justice, social movements, political ecology, and related fields to explore questions underlying theories of the commons, exchange our perspectives, and discuss what commons thinking can offer beyond applications in resource management. The goal of this workshop is to push the boundaries of commons theory and explore how commons thinking, methodologies, and frameworks can advance understanding about human-environment relations, how we relate to one another, and how we wish to organize or potentially transform our societies.
