Reliable energy provision is one of the most urgent prerequisites for post-conflict reconstruction. But how can Syria rebuild the electricity sector in ways that are not only technically viable, but also socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable?

The German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) warmly invites you to an exchange on this policy-relevant question.
At the event, Sultan Jalabi will present his study entitled „Toward a Transformative Reconstruction of the Electricity Sector in Syria“, which assesses the difficult and intertwining political and technical situations in Syria‘s electricity sector after a long and devastating war. Drawing on extensive field research conducted in 2025, he outlines the recent developments in different Syrian regions and explores opportunities and challenges for pursuing a transformative and inclusive rehabilitaton of the energy sector, which also benefits from so far off-grid renewable electricity production.

The presentation will be followed by discussant’s comments (t.b.c.) and a Q&A round and policy discussion.
