Smart industrial policy anticipates the shift to a green economy; it guides and promotes the domestic economy so that it can take advantage of the opportunities offered by this structural change early on. At the same time, it is increasingly evident that the sustainability transition must be just to be acceptable and, thus, feasible.

Development policy has thus adopted the “just transition” approach. By focusing on green and inclusive industrial policy as a driver of development, German cooperation could expand the specific profile it has already established in some areas. BMZ's new core theme strategy "Sustainable economic development, training and employment" clearly shifts gears towards a perspective of green structural transformation.

This conference connected policy makers, researchers, and practitioners, to discuss the economic and social opportunities of green and inclusive industrial policy for a just transition. IDOS has, over the past 10 years, explored policy priorities and ways to successfully implement cooperation programmes. In this conference, we presented, together with some of our international research partners, innovative and concrete ideas for the implementation of BMZ's new core theme strategy.

The conference concludes the research project “Green Economy”, which is financially supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, BMZ. Participation was possible in-person or virtually.
