This September, United Nations (UN) member states will come together in New York for the SDG Summit and the Ministerial Meeting on the 2024 Summit of the Future. The 2023 SDG Summit marks the mid-point of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The 2024 Summit of the Future (SOTF) has its origins in the UN’s 75th anniversary commemorations. Back then, member states formulated a number of commitments – their common agenda – and asked Secretary-General António Guterres to prepare recommendations in this regard. The Secretary-General’s subsequent report entitled “Our Common Agenda” proposed i. a. a Summit of the Future, which member states agreed to take forward. A common task of both summits is to intensify collective action and work towards more effective UN and global governance structures in order to better address existing and future challenges in the area of sustainable development.

The preparatory processes for the two summits are well underway. The ambassadors of Ireland and Qatar co-lead the negotiations on the Political Declaration for the SDG-Summit. The ambassadors of Germany and Namibia act as co-facilitators for the intergovernmental process on the SOTF which reaches its first milestone in September this year: a preparatory ministerial meeting. The Secretary General already suggested several negotiation tracks for the SOTF, he also announced a series of Policy Briefs to inform member states’ consultations.

This event is part of the Wednesday Expert Talk Series. The Series has a two-fold objective:

  • First, invited experts will provide their insights on the topics under negotiation in the context of the Summit of the Future (SOTF), for example commenting the Policy briefs published by the Secretary-General, thus allowing the audience to follow and understand what is being discussed.
  • Second, we will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of policy proposals as well as their political feasibility, all this with a particular focus on their potential impact with regard to progress in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and the SDGs.
