With the UN80 initiative, the UN development system once again goes through a repositioning exercise. In the past, similar reform processes have tended to follow a narrow path defined by old recipes and a reluctance to confront major dysfunction. There is now a need to take a fresh look at UN development cooperation. For two reasons: First, the UN development system we have today is the result of an ad-hoc, largely unplanned evolution, often in response to short-term political interests and marked by vested interests. There is thus a need to correct accumulated imperfections. Second, the UN needs to respond to a changing global environment defined by profound disruptions to the development aid landscape, shifts in global relations, and the growing importance of sustainability challenges that require global responses. It’s against that backdrop that the UN project at IDOS invites a group of distinguished experts to discuss a new vision for UN development cooperation and implications for institutional arrangements.
