Session in OTT Conference, “Think Tanks + Impact: Challenging our Understanding of Influence”
Policy impact is hard to plan for and measure in the national context of a think tank; it often is an ambiguous process without clear notions of ‘causal relations’. This challenge redoubles when we look at operations in (international) networks and in regional/transnational spaces. Unpacking what constitutes impact and how impact is achieved is thus crucially important.
Which elements do institutions consider in their impact creating processes? To what extent is impact the result of a deliberate process? Which strategies are most effective in achieving the intended impact? How do they keep track of (perceived) achievements?
Speakers:
- Beatriz Pfeifer, Partnerships and International Cooperation Manager, CEBRI
- Elizabeth Sidiropoulos, Chief Executive, SAIIA
- Gala Díaz Langou, Executive Director, CIPPEC
- Luciana Santos Servo, President, IPEA
- Sara Pantuliano, Chief Executive, ODI Global
- Sven Grimm, Head of Programme, Knowledge Cooperation and Training, IDOS
Given that many of the speakers in this session have been actively involved in South Africa G20 and T20 processes—and that the Conference is taking place in South Africa, the current G20 Presidency—the session will aim to initiate a discussion on the impact of the G20, particularly for the Global South. Several participating members of the Think 20 (T20) are directly engaged in the official G20 track. Insights from this session can contribute to the G20 at 20 Years review, one of the key deliverables of South Africa’s G20 Presidency.
