Science Dialogue Day – Empowering Leadership Programmes: Understanding Rationales and Assessing Impact
Event Type
Event Series
Location / Date
Bonn, 08.12.2025
German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) in cooperation with the Academy of International Affairs (AIA)
As part of the Science Dialogue Day series, the in-person session on 8 December 2025 continues the exchange among leadership academies in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) as initiated in 2024. Building on the discussions of the first Science Dialogue Day, which focused on strategies for diversity and inclusion in leadership programmes, this second meeting deepens the dialogue by exploring the rationales of leadership programmes and approaches to conceptualising and assessing their impact.
Across NRW, numerous research, training, and policy-oriented institutions have established academies and capacity-building initiatives to prepare young professionals and emerging leaders for global challenges. While these programmes share a commitment to sustainable development and international cooperation, opportunities for regional coordination and peer learning remain limited. The Science Dialogue Day provides a platform for structured exchange, reflection, and collaboration among these initiatives, thereby strengthening the regional ecosystem for transformative leadership development.
The workshop will offer an interactive space for discussing the conceptual foundations and objectives of leadership programmes, sharing practices and experiences in impact assessment, and identifying pathways for stronger cooperation among leadership academies. Participants will engage in dialogue on theories of change and the evolving mandates of leadership development in times of geopolitical, ecological, and social uncertainty.
The event will bring together directors and coordinators of leadership programmes in NRW that focus on sustainable development and international cooperation.
The Science Dialogue Day series is organised by the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) within the framework of the Managing Global Governance (MGG) Programme, with financial support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Ministry of Science and Culture of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
