The Climate–Nature Nexus in the Triple COP Year
Event Type
Panel discussion
Location / Date
Bonn, 12.06.2026
German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) and the Émile Durkheim Research Centre
The Triple COP year brings political attention to the intersection of climate, biodiversity, and land. Yet for practitioners working across these processes — in government delegations, civil society organisations, and research institutions — the experience is often one of fragmentation: parallel negotiating tracks, competing mandates, and tools that were designed in silos. This session asks what it actually takes to work across the Rio Conventions, and what "synergy" looks like from the ground up.
Nature is our cross-cutting thread: not as a fixed category but as a living, contested concept whose meaning is continuously negotiated between indigenous knowledge systems, scientific paradigms, legal frameworks, and political interests. Bringing together voices from policy and civil society, from the North and the South, the session explores where these different understandings of nature converge — and how synergies between the Rio Conventions can be operationalised.
Speakers:
- Niklas Wagner, PhD (Post-doctoral Researcher, IDOS (Environmental Governance) & University of Geneva (UNIGE)
- Claudia Hiepe, PhD (Expert, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany)
- Melanie Coath (Climate Action Network (CAN) — Ecosystems Group, RSPB
- Thaynah Gutierrez (Civil Society, Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), Brazil)
- Nady Mahmoud (High Level Climate Champions)
This Panel discussion is Part of the conference "Climate Change as a Crisis of Nature?" — 12–13 June 2026
