The Voice of the Global South: The Group of 77 and Effective Multilateralism at the United Nations

Event Type
Round table

Location / Date
Berlin, 26.11.2024

Tensions with the global South have increased in recent years. International crises, such as that in the Middle East, unresolved global challenges related to climate, debt, the reform of international organisations and other issues, persistent power imbalances and the emerging neocolonial criticism of them, all illustrate how difficult it has become to conduct a constructive global dialogue. Yet, effective multilateralism is more necessary than ever to address these global challenges.

A key aspect in that context is how the global South organises itself for its (new) role in world politics. One of the most important voices of the global South is the Group of 77 at the United Nations, which, with its 134 members, forms a majority. Little is known about the G77's internal structure, its decision-making processes, and how these influence negotiations in the United Nations General Assembly.

A new study by IDOS (Germany) and Cepei (Colombia) explores this topic. The round table will bring together Government officials, think tank experts and academia to discuss the study and related questions.
