The international roundtable gathered experts from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas to discuss how current global disruptions are reshaping development and trade cooperation, and what this means for sustainability transformations.

Geopolitical tensions, trade conflicts, and declining development aid are eroding trust in multilateral institutions and undermining progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These dynamics are reinforcing existing structural weaknesses - such as underfunded SDGs and inflexible global governance - and encouraging unilateralism over collective action. The trend toward nationalistic and interest-driven policies, including the politicization of trade, is fragmenting cooperation, which some referred to as a “disintegration of integration.”

To address rising geopolitical fragmentation and stalled progress on the SDGs, participants called for reforming global institutions, building new alliances around key sectors such as green infrastructure and sustainable trade, strengthening domestic capacities in the Global South, and shifting development cooperation toward equitable, knowledge-based partnerships.

Participants: confidential round table with high-ranking international participants from governments, research and international institutions. The two round table segments were facilitated by Dr. Axel Berger (IDOS) and Henry Alt-Haaker (HSC gGmbH).
