On 27 February 2010, Chile was affected by a earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale. Talca was the worst hit town. The central market was one of the many buildings that were severely damaged. During the reconstruction phase, a conflict arose between the market sellers, the municipality and a private company wanting to take charge of the reconstruction. As a result, the market sellers decided to occupy the market.
