This chapter presents empirical findings on religious actors in autocratization processes. It first introduces key concepts for the study of religion in regime change and assesses their usability for the analysis of religious actors in autocratization processes. Using these concepts, the chapter assesses the main findings of current literature and builds three types of active roles religious actors may play in autocratization (facilitator, victim, and defender). These are illustrated with empirical examples. On this basis, it formulates a proposal for a future research agenda.
