Contrary to the orthodoxy that portrays African cultures as discriminatory, most of these cultures tolerated diversity and treated gender, sexuality, and sexual orientation as continuums rather than binaries in which one was either a man or a woman and heterosexual or homosexual. Flexibility in gender, sexuality, and sexual orientation as socio-cultural constructions enabled people to move back and forth between masculinity and femininity depending on the requirements of specific situations or circumstances.
