At the event of the 2026 annual meeting of the IDOS International Scientific Advisory Board held under the IDOS annual theme Disruption & Reform, IDOS hosts a public evening panel and reception to which we cordially invite you.

Rule-based global economic governance is under ever more pressure. Disruptive trade policies threaten to replace a logic of cooperation with a logic of deal-making, undermining trade as an engine of economic development and hitting small and poor countries the most. Powerful actors are carving out spheres of influence over critical resources – from rare-earth minerals to energy supplies – increasingly sparking not only competition but conflict. As multilateralism disintegrates in an era of climate crisis, WTO reform becomes ever more urgent as does strengthening reliable trade partnerships with (regional) trade agreements. Sites of geoeconomic contestation and governance are multiple and diverse, extending to underappreciated domains of marine geoeconomics like control of shipping routes, deep-sea mining rights, and ocean-based geoengineering. Meanwhile, development cooperation is seeking to reinvent itself amidst this turmoil and with shrinking budgets, increasingly emphasising the pursuit of economic interests.

This panel discussion invites critical analysis of the disruptions we witness and explores pathways for reform that respond in an emancipatory way, without being driven by the forces that seek to undermine a rules-based order. As the public evening event of the IDOS International Scientific Advisory Board meeting, it offers a unique opportunity for exchange between experts from the NRW research and international hub with leading international experts on how to navigate the shifting tides in geoeconomics.
