Aid effectiveness meets domestic politics: the case of EU budget support

This article uses the case of the EU's budget support policy – one of the most prominent aid instruments – to show, firstly, how different preferences within the EU have led to severe coordination problems and, secondly, how effectiveness concerns have fallen prey to domestic politics and internal conflicts among member states and the EC.
