Given its profile within Africa and its geopolitical weight as a G20-member, South Africa can be an important partner for the EU’s Green Deal. The country has launched some key green initiatives, such as Africa’s first carbon tax. But challenges remain, with South Africa’s economy dependent on coal. So, the question is: can the EU and South Africa join forces to become global green leaders?
