How can Europe address the migration of thousands of young people from Africa heading north? This is still a key issue in European politics. Major programmes, such as the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF), have been launched in recent years to cope with the challenges created by the movement of refugees and migrants. In addition to combating the causes of flight through development cooperation, it also aims to achieve more effective migration management along the main migration routes in the Horn of Africa, the Sahel countries of West Africa, and large countries of origin such as Nigeria. The idea is to improve socio-economic perspectives in countries of origin or transit and establish more effective controls at African national borders and European external borders in order to dissuade people from embarking on the dangerous journey north.
