Europe is currently facing huge challenges. The rapid increase in the numbers of refugees, the attacks on Paris and other possible dangers from Islamic terror require fast action. Crises and conflicts in Syria, instability in Afghanistan and a repressive regime in Eritrea are no longer just tragedies that occur well away from European everyday life; they have long been problems with global effects.
As always, it is difficult in times of crisis to determine a clear orientation for any necessary future course-correction when times are still changing. But we are already under pressure and must prepare for, take and implement such decisions. What will a long-term, successful integration of refugees look like at a local level? What will new European rules on migration, which will actually have to be applied by the Member States, look like? What does a security policy look like that takes into account the changing dangers from terrorism and violent military conflicts?
