Until recently green finance and financial inclusion have been treated in the academic and policy literatures mostly as two distinct, largely unrelated concepts. However, this study shows that there are meaningful overlaps between these two areas of finance. Key target groups for financial inclusion tend to be disproportionally exposed to the risks and impacts of local and global environmental change, while also playing an important role in mitigating environmental change. This study hence calls for a holistic approach that combines green finance and financial inclusion policies in an integrated inclusive green finance approach.
