Volltext/Document

Cities – and the global urbanisation trend – play a central role in achieving sustainable development worldwide and are of particular relevance to the prospective success of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda.
This article discusses why cities are essential for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement. After an introduction to the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement, the article analyses the role of cities in the context of these two key agendas. Moreover, the article highlights the New Urban Agenda agreed upon at Habitat III, the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development, which took place in 2016 and represents a key step towards implementing
the 2030 Agenda. Finally, the article presents some of the key steps ahead and provides concluding comments.
