Die Schuldenkrise in zahlreichen Entwicklungsländern hat sich erheblich zugespitzt. Derzeit ist laut dem Internationalen Währungsfonds (IWF) mehr als die Hälfte der Länder mit niedrigem Einkommen hoch verschuldet, 2015 war es noch rund ein Drittel.
