Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS) for an industry or product entail both opportunities and challenges for emerging economies. New national multi-stakeholder platforms on VSS in India (launched March 2016), Brazil (May/June 2017) and China reflect the increasingly proactive stance that business and government actors from these countries take up on the issue. DIE through its Managing Global Governance (MGG) programme has been involved in some of the processes leading up to national VSS platforms, partnering with key institutions in emerging economies as well as the UN Forum on Sustainability Standards (UNFSS).
The launch workshop in Qingdao brought together stakeholders from China and other emerging economies, representing government agencies, companies, international organizations and think tanks.
MGG is implemented with financial support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
