Food retail chains are among the most influential actors in global food systems. In Germany and the US, they account for over 80% of consumer food purchases, and their share is growing rapidly in emerging economies as well. Their decisions shape both upstream production practices and downstream consumption patterns, making them pivotal levers for a more sustainable food system.

This two-day conference brings together new research from the SuperSustain consortium, the 'Retail for Sustainability' project, the CAPS project at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and several other ongoing research initiatives. Together, we explore:

  • How food retail chains' sustainability profiles differ
  • What factors drive these differences
  • Key levers and barriers for retailers in transforming the food system at scale

On day 1, we focus on presentations and discussions of academic research papers, while day 2 brings together speakers from the food retail industry, business associations, NGOs, and the public sector on several panels.

Both days are open to all participants. Day 2 is especially designed for a broader audience beyond academia.
