On 11 December 2014 the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) conducted this workshop to discuss methodological issues of multidimensional poverty measurement.
Poverty has long been considered a multidimensional phenomenon in the international development debate. But it has taken until rather recently to raise awareness that poverty should also be measured as a multidimensional phenomenon. In 2010, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) made a first attempt in this regard by establishing the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) and the discussion that started after the MPI's publication has revealed the difficulties of such an endeavour.
The workshop was meant to discuss the following methodological questions:
- Which dimensions of poverty should a multidimensional poverty index cover?
- Which weights should be applied to the different dimensions?
- Which function should be used in order to aggregate the different dimensions of poverty?
