Addressing global challenges by joint knowledge production are at the core of the dialogue, research and training programme Managing Global Governance (MGG) that is implemented by the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) with partners from emerging economies. With the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have become a central focus of the discussions. Although not a sustainable development goal in itself, digitalisation has great potential to accelerate progress towards achieving the SDGs, by creating new opportunities through technological innovation. In India, political efforts to foster digital transformation processes are reflected in the government’s “Digital India” programme that aims to create a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy, and includes a National e-Governance Plan.

This year’s MGG alumni meeting in New Delhi, India, explored Indian perspectives on digitalisation and sustainable development as well as ideas for MGG activities in the future. The meeting was jointly organised and implemented by DIE and MGG partner ‘Quality Council of India’ (QCI). The event brought together Indian MGG alumni working in the public sector, civil society organisations, research institutions and the private sector, as well as invited speakers from partner institutions. During the two-days meeting, participants discussed the opportunities and challenges of digitalisation with regards to e-governance (transparency and reach of services), social (in-)equality and online education. The participants highlighted connectivity, digital literacy and data security as the most pressing challenges.

MGG is implemented on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
