Religion has been an underlying current in the study of democratization for years. Until recently, the research was permeated by the implicit assumption that non-Christian religions presented significant impediments to democratization. First comparative empirical studies do not support this argument. Instead, religious actors often contribute to both democratization processes in some areas (procedural aspects: elections, constitutionalism etc.), but to de-democratization in other areas (liberal aspects: religious freedom, minority rights, women’s rights). This research project builds on this research by enriching its empirical basis. We compare all world religions, notably Buddhism, Chinese Religions, Islam, Orthodox Christianity, and Hinduism. It also, importantly, will systematize not only the contribution of religious actors to democratization, but also to de-democratization processes and authoritarian reversal.
This workshop brought together authors who contribute to a comparative volume on the role of religious actors in processes of de-democratization.
