As part of the Science Dialogue series, the in-person session on 5 November 2026 continues the exchange among leadership academies in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) as initiated in 2024. Building on previous discussions of diversity and inclusion strategies and the rationales and impact of leadership programmes, this third meeting deepens the dialogue by focusing on two interconnected priorities: the joint positioning of leadership programmes in the current political landscape, and a structured mapping of alumni networks to strengthen regional complementarity and collaboration.

Across NRW, numerous research, training, and policy-oriented institutions have established academies and capacity-building initiatives to prepare young professionals and emerging leaders for global challenges. While these programmes share a commitment to sustainable development and international cooperation, opportunities for regional coordination and peer learning remain limited. The Science Dialogue provides a platform for structured exchange, reflection, and collaboration among these initiatives, thereby strengthening the regional ecosystem for transformative leadership development.

The event takes place in parallel to the „A European Summit: Freedom of Research", organised by the Charlemagne Prize Foundation, RWTH Aachen, and the Käthe Hamburger Kolleg Research Cultures. Coordinators from the NRW network will contribute a public panel to the Summit programme, making the case for why leadership programmes and their alumni networks are essential infrastructure for democracy and international knowledge cooperation. This parallel format reflects the Science Dialogue's growing ambition: to translate internal peer exchange into external visibility and collective impact.

The Science Dialogue series is organised by the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) within the framework of the Managing Global Governance (MGG) Programme, with financial support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Ministry of Science and Culture of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
