The Workshop “Tackling Energy Behaviours: Insights from Developing Country Firms and Households” was hosted by the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) in Bonn on 25 November 2014. It brought together researchers and practitioners in the fields of behavioural economics and energy efficiency, including participants from development banks, think tanks, implementing agencies and multilateral organisations. The Workshop presented the results of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Co-operation and Development (BMZ) funded project Managing the Transition to Sustainable and Inclusive Energy Systems.
Background
Energy frequently accounts for a high portion of expenditures by firms and households in developing and emerging economies. Climate change mitigation, business competitiveness, fuel poverty, and energy security are just some of the pursuits which may benefit from energy efficiency. Yet, implementation lags globally. How can behavioural insights inform energy efficiency initiatives to increase uptake?
James Sonam Walsh, contributor to the forthcoming 2015 World Development Report on 'Mind, Behavior and Society' delivered the keynote. Experts and practitioners in the area presented findings from case studies conducted in Africa, Latin America and Asia. Drawing upon these experiences, recommendations for policy and programme design were presented and enriched by a lively audience discussion.
