The world is undergoing multiple, simultaneous crises in a way we have not seen before. Crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine hit back-to-back, and are interacting with sweeping social and economic shifts, dangerous planetary changes, and increases in polarization and loss of social cohesion in many societies. Added to this are geopolitical rifts that further complicate the effective management of these crises.

As the universal organisation with the mandate to set, promote and implement multilateral norms and help countries live up to their commitments, the United Nations has a key role to play at country-level and beyond. What kind of leadership by UN staff at country-level and at headquarters is needed to meaningfully bring about a new sustainable development paradigm? How can UN leaders ensure that the UN’s collective response is greater than the sum of its parts? How do UN leaders navigate the tension between global norms and local realities?

This event will discuss expectations, current challenges and opportunities for effective UN leadership. It is co-organised by IDOS, the UN System Staff College and the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation and benefits from the presence of participants of the UN Country Team Leadership Course in Bonn.

After a brief introduction of the 2022 flagship report The Art of Leadership in the United Nations by the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundations and discussion with two key contributors, there will be a discussion on the challenges, and expectations of leadership in the United Nations System. A Fishbowl format will allow attendees to share their views while maintaining opportunities for interaction. The event starts with a reception.
