German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS)
The Egyptian president is making efforts to transform Egypt into a ‘new Republic” capable of reshaping Egypt’s economy, polity, society, and regional roles. The question is whether this transformation is just a modification to the state established in 1952 or encompasses a complete change in form, essence, or purpose, leading to a fundamental redefinition of the political regime. The new book Egypt’s New Authoritarian Republic (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 2025), edited by Robert Springborg and Abdel-Fattah Mady, discusses this question and breaks it into several key areas of investigation. It explores the changes in authoritarian governance in Egypt since 2013 and their implications for the country’s future.
The book will be launched virtually

at 4-5 pm (Berlin, Paris, Brussels), 10-11 am (New York), 5-6 pm (Cairo)
