With only four years remaining until the deadline for the United Nations’ Agenda 2030, the latest assessments reveal a stark reality: the world is far from achieving these ambitious targets (United Nations, 2025). Meanwhile, international cooperation and multilateralism face profound challenges, as global powers increasingly reject collaborative governance of the global commons or even deny the existence of shared challenges.
This conference serves as a critical juncture to rethink sustainability cooperation in an era of volatility and uncertainty. As a precursor to formal international discussions scheduled to start at the Sustainable Development Goal Summit in September 2027, the event will assess the importance and impact of shared global goals, extract lessons, and identify possible frameworks and partnerships needed to ensure a global sustainability framework beyond 2030. It will also explore emerging opportunities and challenges, such as digital transformation and artificial intelligence, which were not central to the original Agenda 2030 discussions, or the mechanisms that support monitoring and implementation. Most importantly, the conference will identify processes and evaluate which formats of cooperation hold the greatest promise for governing the global commons in a rapidly changing world.
