Angesichts erheblicher Finanzierungslücken für die Umsetzung der Agenda 2030 für nachhaltige Entwicklung und der multiplen Krisen unserer Zeit – Klimakrise, Verschuldungskrise und zunehmende geopolitische Spannungen – steht das internationale Finanzsystem vor vielfältigen Herausforderungen. Beispielsweise erfolgen immer noch enorme Investitionen in kohlenstoffintensive Industrien während für die sozial-ökologische Transformation nicht genügend Finanzmittel zur Verfügung stehen. Vor diesem Hintergrund befasst sich das IDOS-Finanzteam in Forschung und Politikberatung mit der Frage, wie ein resilientes und nachhaltiges internationales Finanzsystem ausgestaltet sein müsste, um die Umsetzung der Agenda 2030 für nachhaltige Entwicklung zu unterstützen und Krisen entgegenzuwirken. Dafür werden auch die relevanten internationalen Prozesse, wie zum Beispiel die Financing for Development (FfD)-Konferenz 2025, der Weltbankreformprozess, die Bridgetown-Initiative oder der New Global Financial Pact begleitet. Die aktuellen Forschungs- und Beratungsschwerpunkte des IDOS im Bereich des internationalen Finanzsystems umfassen:

- Reformoptionen für die internationalen Finanzinstitutionen
- Ausgestaltung der globalen Sustainable Finance-Architektur
- Reformen des Global Financial Safety Net
- Privatsektormobilisierung
- Finanzsektorentwicklung
