International organizations are important actors, arenas and instruments of global environmental governance and politics. This chapter reviews conceptual debates and empirical findings on international organizations and their relevance for global environmental politics research and points to emergent issues for international organization's research in relation to recent trends in global environmental governance. Empirically it focuses on the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the state of organizational reforms in international environmental governance in the context of the "Rio+20" UN Conference on Sustainable Development.
