Nachhaltige Stadtentwicklung

Über die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung lebt heute in Städten. Als Folge von Migration, natürlichem Bevölkerungswachstum und Eingemeindung werden es im Jahr 2050 voraussichtlich zwei Drittel sein. Ungefähr 90 Prozent des Wachstums findet in Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern statt, insbesondere in Asien und Afrika. Kleine und mittlere Städte stellen dort die am schnellsten wachsenden Räume dar.

In Städten konzentrieren sich sowohl Herausforderungen als auch Potenziale globaler Entwicklung. Eine noch steigende Anzahl der städtischen Bevölkerung lebt in informellen Siedlungen ohne Zugang zu adäquater sozialer und technischer Infrastruktur. Städte verursachen 70 Prozent der klimaschädlichen Gase und haben einen hohen Flächen- und Ressourcenverbrauch. Gleichzeitig gehen von ihnen wirtschaftliche Entwicklung und soziale und ökologische Transformationsprozesse ins Umland und weltweit aus.

Auf der Habitat III-Weltkonferenz für Siedlungs- und Stadtentwicklung im Oktober 2016 in Quito, wurde ein globaler Fahrplan für nachhaltige Stadtentwicklung der kommenden zwanzig Jahren verabschiedet. Auf dem neunten World Urban Forum 2018 in Kuala Lumpur wurden konkrete Schritte zur Implementierung dieser New Urban Agenda diskutiert.
