Starke Gesundheitssysteme sind die Voraussetzung dafür, dass Menschen auf der ganzen Welt gesundheitlich gut versorgt werden. Die COVID-19-Pandemie und ihre Folgen üben einen enormen zusätzlichen Druck auf die Gesundheitssysteme aus. Wissenschaftler*innen am German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) analysieren, wie globale Gesundheit in den kommenden Jahren gestärkt werden kann. Zum einen geht es darum, Pandemien und Epidemien in Zukunft zu verhindern. Zum anderen müssen die Gesundheitssysteme widerstandsfähiger werden. Forschung und Beratung zum Thema Gesundheit umfasst am IDOS derzeit drei Bereiche:
One Health: Die Prävention örtlich begrenzter Epidemien und kontinentaler Pandemien kann nur gelingen, wenn man die Gesundheit von Mensch, Tier und Umwelt als eine Einheit im Sinne des One Health Konzepts begreift. Aber auch Probleme wie Antibiotikaresistenz (AMR) oder mangelnde Sanitär- und Wasserversorgung stellen gesundheitliche Herausforderungen dar, die durch integrierte Ansätze und sektorübergreifende Zusammenarbeit adressiert werden müssen. Das IDOS untersucht, wie diese Ansätze wirken und Zusammenarbeit besser gelingen kann – etwa durch Interventionsstudien und Studien zu One Health Governance – und gibt dazu Handlungsempfehlungen.
Gesundheitsfinanzierung: Die nachhaltige Finanzierung von Gesundheitsdienstleistungen ist unabdingbar, um eine Gesundheitsversorgung für alle Menschen zu gewährleisten. IDOS untersucht die Effektivität verschiedener Finanzierungsinstrumente – etwa sozialer Krankenversicherungen – und zeigt auf, wie diese nachhaltig gestaltet werden können.
Klimawandel und Gesundheit: Der Klimawandel beeinflusst global die Verbreitung von Krankheitserregern und verschlechtert direkt die Lebensbedingungen, wodurch die Gesundheitssysteme weltweit zusätzlich belastet werden. Das IDOS untersucht effektive Maßnahmen zur Minderung klimabedingter Gesundheitsrisiken wie Dürren, Überschwemmungen und vektorübertragene Krankheiten. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse unterstützen die Entwicklung von Politikempfehlungen und Anpassungsstrategien gegenüber klimatischen Herausforderungen im Gesundheitsbereich.
